Transformers won't change 6v DC to 12v DC. Transformers only work on alternating current. In order to step up 6v to 12v, the step up device would have to turn the dc to ac with some sort of a switching mechanism, transformer it up, and then rectify and filter it! Some of the old tube-type automobile radios had a mechanical vibrator to handle the switching duties. There are some neat little 12volt gel cells available for use in alarm systems.
