Merry Christmas to all from the Black Belt in Central Alabama. Our local tree of choice is the red cedar. It thrives in the chalky soils of the Black Belt. That's not to say that a bunch of city-folk type don't buy a pile of imported firs and spruces from your neck of the woods. They are good-looking trees.
