Best way to size up a disc is one disc blade per hp. of the tractor. Another to watch for on discs is blade size and concave. A lot of discs sold in the 70s and 80s had 18" and 20" blades. With 4" off them they can still look quite good along side and original 16" with only 1" worn away. Compare the concave with a new disc. Concave must be good for effective cutting.

Another item to watch for if you have stone is guage of disc. Some disc blades are as thin as 1/8" at hub while others can be as thick as 3/8" at hub. Unless you have a lot of stone don't bother with real heavy one. I would also tend to stay away from a disc with 1/8" plates. I always liked 1/4" thick blades, gave strength, good weight. I suspect the industry has exceeded the 3/8" thickness by now as you see discs out there with blades 24-28 inch diameter.
