You can do it that way, but be careful! There is enough compression in a diesel to blow the head sky high! Probably hand crank on one of those instead of the starter.

I tried that with my W-9, put some of the nuts back on part way to keep the head from flying. Didn't budge it, but evidently broke it loose because I lost compression after that.
