Piston and head questions on M

I just tore down the M today. I first noticed that the pistons have a step on the top of them witch covers a little over half of the piston and sticks up about 1/4 inch high. Are these the stock pistons?? I thought they would of been totally flat. I have read in the old posts that there were pistons you could get that would turn your low compression head into a high compression head. Is this true? The number on my head is 8790-DB. Above that number there is a IH logo and a # 1 and X of either side. I would really appreciate any of help. Thanks!!
