Sam: I was told that same thing years ago by an old gent an owner operator of a small country shop. he probably rebuilt a half dozen 4 cylinder Farmalls a year and did minor tuneups to many others. He never owned a timing light and did all timing tractors by ear. He was well recognized for his expertise as local IH dealer used to consult him on problems. He showed me how to time a 4 cylinder gas Farmall by ear. He said the Farmall engine if you listen to it closely will tell you when its right. Some guys get along fine with this others don't. I have owned 3 SuperA, 2- 130, H, Super M, 300 and 504. At one time or another I have timed all of these, except the 504 (didn't keep it long enough) and have never used a light. Next time you are timing with a light just listen to your tractor. You either have an ear for this or you don't.
