Yes, they can be very dangerous. I only go about a third throttle and only in the smoothe field. It does a great job. The rest of the time I use the John Deere wide front. It is heavier and uses more gas, but is safer. Your dad can certainly count his blessings. I was driving a 46 M with a front mounted cultivator down a paved country road when the eyebolt on the right side came loose and let the whole front section fall off! (I found out later there was supposed to be two more hex head bolts through the frame, too.) Of course I ran over it about 18 mph. Bruised my arm and leg, but the tractor didn't turn over, even though it bounced all over the road. There were pucker marks in the metal seat pan when I got stopped.
