TEMP GUAGE DISASSEMBLY

I have a 424 with a temp guage which is not working. To test it, I need to remove it from the cable lead which goes to the temp probe. I have the guage out of the dash and all visible nuts removed but the cable will not pull out of the guage. I also tried to unscrew them from each other, again, it did not work..any tricks to it??
