Patience, patience, & tenacity. That is the answer.
My sons & I have replaced the seals on two "H" & one "M" Farmall. Like you said, the old seal is heavy-duty; that is why it lasted as long as it did!
A 3/8" or 1/2" wide chisel will work well; just get a bigger hammer.
We have also used an air hammer (very gently) with a punch to help deform the outer case for removal.
