Discharging Battery on H

My "H" has a 6-volt system with an 8-volt battery. (It was that way when I got it.) According to the ammeter, it is constantly discharging when it runs except when it is running wide open. After a couple of weeks of use an hour per night, I have to recharge the battery. A voltage test indicates that the generator puts out 10 volts at half throttle. Why do I constanly have to recharge? Is it because I have a six volt voltage regulator that can't keep up the charge of the 8-volt battery or is there an underlying problem with the electrical system? Would buying a 6-volt battery answer all my problems? (tractor related that is)
