But before you do, verify that it's not the cable. I just had the same problem on my 504 and the cable was broken in two places inside the sheath. Either remove the gas tank cover or maybe see if you can just remove the white skirt and reach up from the battery area to remove the cable from the back of the tach. You should be able to spin the tach input fast enough with your fingers to see the needle jump, and/or crank the engine and see if the cable moves inside the sheath.
