There is little doubt about farming being a hazardous business. Many of us carry scars as a constant reminder of what can happen if you let your guard down for even an instant. My lesson came when I was about fourteen, loading heifers on a truck. Got a little too close to a Jersey's head and she swung around and put her sharp little horn through my lower lip, just above the chin. Cut a heck of a gash that even sprayed my cousin, who was on the other side of the animal. The heifer had no idea what happened, she was just nervous about the trip. Bulls are another story. We were taught to never, ever trust them. Very sound advice. Nothing instills fear like looking over your shoulder and seeing a ton of snorting, bounding muscle bearing down on you!
