On the oppsite side of the fence or on horse back. Also found that cows don't like ropes. You can fight off a cow/bull faster with a coil of rope then a pick handle. I have to ride out in the pasture I lease (for my cows) every day to chop ice. I keep a horse betweem me and the cows and always have a coil of rope handy.
