Recommend loading first the truck to it's GVW rating. Additional load should then go on the trailer (but not to exceed to the GCW rating of the truck). Reason is this: In less than ideal driving conditions (slippery road, high cross winds, rough highway, etc) - also in an emergency stop situation - you want as much of the combination's weight as possible on the tow vehicle to insure good vehicle control. If too much of the combination weight is on the trailer you dramatically increase the risk of trailer sway, jackknifing, etc. Next time you see a semi flatbed, dry van or dump truck running with a partial load, notice where the load is positioned: At the front of the trailer. This is to put as much of the load as possible on the tractor. Safe vehicle control the reason why!
