John, I ended up dropping my lift-all out when I replaced the seal as I was doing a restoration anyway. The countershaft nut turned right off with a couple quick jerks of the pipe wrench. I think it will do the same for yours because it never turns on very hard since the lift-all turns freely anyway. The shaft is universal at both ends so it will not matter which way it goes in which side. Hope this helps, sometimes it just takes time with these old tractors.
