The Geneese article on the YTMag homepage seems to cover this pretty well. Also this is a FAQ for the "N" boys over on Ford N page. You could do a search over there for some good information. From what I have gathered reading the various boards here is that if you have a true 12 volt coil, you don't need a resistor at all. If you keep your original 6 volt coil, then yes you need a resistor. The Geneese article even gives a NAPA part number.
