Get a multimeter and check how much resistance there is across the + and - terminals. It it has about 3 Ohms it has an internal resistor and would only work on a 12 volt system. If there's around 1.75 Ohms you can use it on a 6 volt system (or to use on a 12 volt add a ballast resistor in series to bring it up to about 3 Ohms).
