I am assuming you are contemplating taking tank apart somehow, de-rusting it, and putting it back together. I believe I would find an alternative way if I was you. And if it is really really bad I would find another tank that doesn't have a severe rust problem. There are alot of M's being parted out and you should be able to find a suitable gas tank and not spend a great deal of money getting it. There was a post on here awhile back (maybe it was under tractor talk) about cleaning rust out of gas tank. The person stated that they took tank off, put a bunch of screws in it, mounted it to wheel of another tractor, and drove it letting the tank be rotated and screws rattle around in tank working the rust loose. They claimed that it worked quit well, and might be a process you might want to try. Just simply remove screws and rinse the rust out of tank when you are done before putting tank back on tractor.
