It sounds like you are in two gears at once, because the square corners are worn off the shifter. pull the shift rod out the top and make sure all the slides are lined up in the center. At least that is the way I remember doing it 35 years ago on our M, whenever I tried to shift to fast from 4'th to 5'th!
