I'm not an expert, but from experience, some play, or blacklash as it is called is okay. (I'm referring to the rotational movement of the belt pulley output shaft compared to the input gear, on the bottom of the casting.) The belt pulley unit is not a big deal to disassemble. Don't loose, or mix up the shims behind the cover plates though, those hold the meshed gears in place at the right depth of engagement. I would pull the covers and check the bearings, and try to find the specs for setting the gear mesh. Some gear noise is acceptable, but the quieter the better. Remember to fill the belt pulley unit with gear oil before running it.
