Here's a quick electronics lesson for everybody. If you have a 6 volt coil and a 12 volt battery on you tractor, you must use a ballast resistor. If you have a 12 volt coil and 12 volt battery you don't need a ballast resistor. The twelve volt coil may be harder on you points, however. Back to the location of the ballast resistor: It makes NO difference wher you put it as long as it is in series with the coil primary. It must be EITHER between the ignition switch and the coil or between the coil and the distrubtor(points). Either way, the coil will get six volts and the resistor will get six volts. If you don't believe me, try it both ways an use a meter and check the voltage. By the way, I've found a neat ballast resistor from Standard Ignition Products that has a mounting stud and two screw terminals. It's about the size of a quarter. Hope this helps.
