There's been good advice on here, I just thought I'd throw my two cents in. We run around 900 head of cows and keep several horses, so I have a bit of experience in this area. First, like another guy said, horses are very social animals and very much dislike being alone. He should have another horse for "company". Next, the running and chasing is "playing" as far as the horse is concerned. What I think he really needs is to be worked- "use" him to drive the cattle around. Alot. Eventually he'll come to associate the cows with work, and avoid them as much as possible(unless, like another person said, he's competing with them for food, in which case he'll run them off again). If you really don't have that much work you can do with him to keep him a bit tired of the cows, maybe you should reconsider having him.
