Farmall M Clutch

Just purchased my very own 49 M with original loader!! Everything is great on it, guages work, no welds on loader, original 6 volt......I am so doggone exicted to start disking this spring I can't hardly wait! Just curious about one thing. My father in law has an H, and you could let the clutch out slowly (slip it) when backing up to hitch, etc. But I only have about one inch maximum let off before the M engages - I can't slip it at all. I read the post about rust, or oil possibly being on the clutch etc., but want to know what clutch travel before engagement is normal. Thanks for any info!!
