Just got done with a similiar project. Take the fuel tank off, you will thank yourself later. It would be quite difficult to get under there to do anything under that tank. Also, if you just try to prop it up you will probably bend something and you need to be able to lift the cover up a little bit to get it out of there - it can't just slide out.
