If you get to this point, you can remove the valve cover and check the pushrods by spinning them in place and see if any wobble, you'll have to turn the engine over by hand to relieve the pressure on the valves. You can remove the oil pan quite easy, if I remember right, and reach up into the underside of the piston and see if the wrist pin feels loose, you might see if the piston rocks too much which could be a piston slap from a worn or broken skirt. While you're there you can see if the rod feels loose on the crankshaft. You would probably want new gaskets to put the pan and rocker arm cover back on.
