Just enough to get a good bond by removing the rust and old paint. Ifinished one last fall by using the rubber sealant that is used for sealant on a windshield replacement. I put it rather thick hasent showed any signs of leaking. Probably has 10hrs mowing time on it. It is much easier as it doesent run. Just took a 4in grinder and ground it to get a good surface. This was a bad crack someone had attempted to weld and the water ran out as fast as you poured it in.
