It sounds like a good deal. $500.00 even if the engine is shot is pretty reasonable. You didn't say how long it has been sitting in the field. If it has had water in the engine for a winter or 2 . I would have serious doubts about the engine being salvagable. The bright side is lots of engines are available for IH tractors of that vintage. You should also look at engines out of other IH equipment. The gas engine in my 706 is out os 915 combine. I am sure the same interchanges are possible with diesels. Good luck.
