My A acted as you describe. Right brake grabs, left brake requires a lot of pressure. I think you will find that the seal on the tranmission is leaking. If the transmission seals leak oil will get on the left brake band and it will "lubricated."

I replaced both tranmission seals and both brake bands. Now bot sides work about the same.
