Matt K. has prescribed the identical method I had used a few years ago, except I had already removed the lower bolster and substituted a block beneath to prohibit the shaft from dropping to the floor. I would admonish you though, use lots of care not to damage the threads on top the shaft. Use of a dead weight mallet would tend to help tap the top of shaft, preventing that bounce.
