it looks as if there are tubes or pipes pressed in the head where the washers are used. Years ago I worked with a IH tractor mechanic, he would use a tapered punch and lightly drive it into those tubes from the head gasket side making sure they were tight and sealed the top side where the washers were used with white lead. Maybe a possibility of lube oil getting into coolant or coolant into the oil?
