I'd like to disagree that it matters on the placement of the resister. The object is not to have more than 6 volt drop across the coil to prevent excessive current and therefore, heat. It doesn't matter whether it is 6 to 0 volts, 9 to 3 volts, 12 to 6 volts, or 100 to 94 volts (assuming the insulation in the coil could handle 100 volts to a grounding potential (voltage) of 0 volts. It's a simple DC series circuit, E=IR.
