If sales mean anything and I guess most of the guys that bought them new have since passed on. The H is the second highest in sales of all tractors ever produced. It was surpassed only by the Ford 8N. I am not just sure what comes 3rd but I don't beleive it is the M and SM. The M in its day was considered too large by many farmers. The A and SA come in there very close. Then you have C and SC. Deere is the only other company that may be in there in 3 or 4 spot. Your question was IH tractors and sales went this way H and SH no1, M, SM and MTA versus A and SA for 2 and 3 spot. It is so close I don't think anyone knows for sure. C and SC come no4 I would suspect if you polled people today on the IH tractors M, SM and MTA would come out on top. The guys that bought them new probably were buying on need more so than popularity. Guys today would vote on popularity alone.

On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
