I didn't know the new pumps cost $400. Didn't know they were even available. I have purchased two used M&W pumps from the YT classifieds. Both have been good. One appeared to be new. I paid around $200 for each. I have seen them go cheaper both at YT and ebay. Ya, the adapter was homemade. Made it in a Bridgeport. The only problem with this set-up is the breather has to be relocted. It is now on the valve cover like the engine in a 504. Speaking of the 504, my F504 tractor has three pumps. The third pump is off a C motor and bolts right in. Muliple pumps are handy when you want to activate more than one circuit at the same time and get full delivery from each. That extra circuit runs a clamp (similar to a thumb) on the loader bucket.
