You can use it without the wheel, but how wellit works depends on your soil type. T h e wheel makes it easier to keep an even depth in varying soil cnditions. We had a 3-16 on a 350 and didn't h ave a wh eel for a few years. Spent most of the time working the fast-hit ch control to hold depth. Our soil varied from black muck to sand.
