Gary you can jump right to the starter from your battery if you have jumper cables. Your starter is already grounded so take a cable and attatch it to the negative side of the battery( Your farmall is positive ground) jeez, Gary what kind of tractor do you have , this could make a difference. Lets assume it is positive ground..take the cable from the negative side of the battery and jam it onto the starter terminal..if the battery is good and the starter is good it should spin the engine over. If it is a negative ground then put the cable on the positive side of the battery and jam the other end onto the starter terminal. If you successfully turn the engine over then you know you have some bad connections. I work in a service garage and almost daily we get a vehicle that has failed because the battery terminal or starter terminals are green with corrosion. Clean all terminals with fine sandpaper or emery cloth and make sure they are tight. If you have a farmall H, C,B or M they have a habit of starters locking for no reason , and after removing it and replacing it it will work. sometimes the bendix(gear on the end) gets dry and needs a few drops of oil.
