A jumper cable from the battery to the starter terminal works. Depending on the way the solenoid is made you may also be able to jump the two large terminals with a screw driver, sparks WILL fly so be careful, especially if there is any gasoline around. Newer solenoids are built so that it is more difficult to jump them, they usually have a piece of plastic between the terminals. These can be jumped with an old pair of pliers opened wide, or be squeezing the clamp on your jumper cables to open it and spanning the terminals with the clamp. Whatever you use make sure the handle is insulated, and don't leave it there too long because it could weld itself to the terminals and really mess stuff up. Once again, make sure the tractor is in neutral and there is no fuel leak around any place where you will be shorting electrical connections. Wear gloves and safety glasses and all that stuff, too. Be really careful around this old machinery! Good luck, Fireman
