I am surprised to see how many folks start off in 5th. I was always taught to get it rolling good in 4th and then throw in the clutch and shut down the throttle, and carefully shift to 5th. I learned to do this pretty skillfully at the age of 13, so it's not rocket science. We did it to save the clutch. As for locking the brakes, thats a good idea, and I remember a decal to that effect on our H, but it will work against you if you dont have the brakes adjusted evenly. Most folks seem to use the left brake more, and it wears more. Check your brake adjustment occasionally by pressing both pedals down to where they meet resistace, and check to see they are equal. If not, locking the brakes will apply more brake to the side that grabs first.
