Your thrust bearing is probably worn out (the thrust sides) This is not particularly uncommon and is usally caused from one or both, not keeping the oil changed and/or riding the clutch. I have also found some thrust bearings that did NOT have the grooves cut into the flanges which allow more oil to flow between the crank and bearing. We stopped the problem ona lotof the old gas burner, single plate IH trucks by cutting the slots bigger.
