Roger , the PTO shaft of the implement should have a shear on the end that slides onto the tractor's PTO shaft. There is usually a bolt there that when sheared will allow the PTO of the tractor to turn but not the rest of the shaft. Any machinery/tractor supply can show you PTO shafts with this feature. The end that goes on the piece of machinery should have a keyway and a set pin along with a bolt through it so it never moves there or shears there..the shear always occurs at the tractor end. My snowblower shears at this point. I carry spare bolts on the tractor..shearing usually occurs when I scrape up a large piece of ice or a stone...once I scooped up a steel fence post in the auger. I hope this helps. Once you have seen a new PTO shaft , you will see the feature that I am talking about. If you have an old shaft it may not have this feature and need to be replaced..its still cheaper than Pto gears in the tractor...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
