Well,if I remember right from my long ago farm experience, a disc is used to break up the clods and level ground after plowinf, and also to level and cut up the corn stalks before plowing and make them easier to cover and not plug up the plow as easily. Of course these days, the more trash left on the surface the better. A drag was used t smooth out the ground some more after discing and make a finer top layer seedbed.We also used it to cover the tracks after planting, and sometimes to work in oat and clover/alfalfa seeds. Than was befor we had a seed drill for th oats. There are times a field cultivator can be used to prepare a seed bed, instead of a disc. The cultivator loosens the soil more, and I hae been told a discbasically packs the soil below where it is cutting. Hope this helps some. Roger
