mounting hoods on letter series farmalls

Does anyone know if there is some kind of material that originally was installed under each end of hood to keep metal rubbing against metal. If so, does anyone have any suggestions on what should be used and how to fasten it. In this case one end rubs on gas tank and the other rubs on grill. The metal on my hood is very thin on the ends from all the rubbing!
