Most of the earlier mags had a safety gap (to give the spark another place to go) to prevent damage to the coil from turning the mag without a proper wire hooked to it. The H-4 and J-4 have no such safety gap. If the coil is good, it WILL make a spark SOMEWHERE...even if it has to do it internally. For that reason, NEVER turn the mag if the spark has no place to go...you may damage that expensive coil. Now, to test it, put the mag in a vise. Open the gap on an old plug to 3/16" or a little more and clamp it to the mag body. Hook it up with a plug wire and test away. A good mag can easily jump 1/4". George Willer
