On the F series, the spark advance lever is also the ignition shutoff. When starting, move the spark lever down a bit, but just enough to make it spark, not enough to be advanced. When in the retarded position, the spark will occur at top dead center of crank rotation, so the resulting ignition will create the explosion on the downstrokeof the piston, and therefore no danger of kicking back. When it is running, then advance the spark lever down to normal position. Having said that, I must say that it is imperitive that the mag be properly timed to the engine. I had an F20 that had the mag off by 2 teeth on the gear, and it was very touchy between off and too much advance. It kicked on me at the fair a few years ago, and my wrist was sore for a week. I fixed it the next day. If the seller willnot or cannot start the tractor for you, and show you how, the I would push start it the first time. Then make note in your mind of where the lever has to be to shut off the spark. Just past that point is where you want to place the lever for starting. It is also advisable to put a bolt or pin through the crank so it stays on the tractor. If it does kick, you will be surprised how far it will throw the crank if it is not pinned on. I hope this helps you and does not discourage you from a crank start tractor. With care, they are just fine. I started cranking an F20 when I was a school kid, and never had a problem. The F20 came with a mag that has an automatic impulse device, which is a spring loaded delay on the mag drive that will spin the mag quickly when starting with a crank. This device also retards the spark a bit when cranking, making it even safer. The farmall regular had an older style mag that had an impulse coupling that required reseting each time, and so the F20 mag was an improvement.
