Wayne - You sure you've got a Delco alternator there? What you describe sounds like an older Ford, or possibly a Prestolite unit. Externally regulated Delco units will have only two wires ("relay" and "field") connecting the alternator and regulator.

To your field resistor question, the field resistor is not used in an alternator conversion. The "L" and "H" switch positions on the light swtich then meaningless - they become simply 2 alternative "off" positions for the lights!
