I had the same problem, but not with an A. Most gass caps have a seal/gasket that is suppose to fit tight on the neck of the tank when gas cap is put on and turned. Two things happen here. The seal/gasket gets thinned out and dried out and cracked and brittle and what not after years of use. The other thing is the metal tabs on the cap and the metal it slides against on the tank wears down after years of use. Both reasons will cause cap to fit somewhat looser than it needs to be and allow for the leak. Is what I did is custom made my own gasket to put in the cap. Made it a little thicker than perhaps what the original one was to start with. I used the gasket sheets that you can get to cut your own gasket out, that you can get at most parts stores. To make it thicker I simply put more than one layer in for the gasket. One cap I think I put three gaskets in it. It fit real sloppy when I started. All caps that I re-did turned out fine. They fit tight and did not leak. You might want to use a different material than the paper type gasket sheet. Not sure how long it will last and what not. The way I figured it, it was a cheap fix and can be done again if needed.

It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
