I am unsure of how far you will be driving and what type of roadways that you will be on. If I was going to make the trip with it I would drive it without any lights. I would restrict my driving to day light hours only and I would take secondary road ways or side streets and stay off of major road ways if at all or whenever possible. You might have the buddy follow you but don't have him right on your back. Have him follow with a little distance in between and perhaps with the hazard lights flashing on the truck. You may also want to slap a slow moving sign on the rear of tractor. If traveling on a major highway is manditory for the rout, I would forget it and just haul it to school on a trailor. Lights won't help you much on a major highway because the slow speed is the major hazard. And the smart thing to do is stay off of all roadways after dark or before sun-up.
