Ohiosteve, you may be surprized when you get the old stud out that the damage down in is not as bad as you fear and sometimes cleaning up the threads with a tap and reinstalling the bolt will work, the worst case is you tap it out larger and use the bigger bolt. I would not recommend welding the hole shut, but rather work with what you have there. Start with a very small drill and try to get into the stud as straight as you can, then keep going up in size until you can get an easy out into it , or picking chisels to pick what is left out of the threads..its a heck of a job...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
