What the others say is true but there will be little bubbling sound (like the fizz in soda-pop) as the charging battery lets off hydrogen gas. This is why not to smoke around charging batteries. Not sure if your fizzing is normal or excessive. See if you can check the electrolyte quality with a hygrometer. If you have a charger, listen to a good 12 volt battery charge to get an idea of the correct sound. On some maintenance-free batteries you may not notice it as much because the top is closed up.
