W400D electrics

Have just bought a W 400 D, 1956 serial no 3354.
it starts and runs great but the amp meter runs to discharge and to charge when you switch on the lights. On investigation it looks like a new Delco-Remy regulator has been fitted,also I note the tractor is negative earth, is this correct I thought this age of machine would be Positive earth,would this make amp meter work oppisite way?
can this regulator run both ways(Neg or Pos earth), or is it heading for a burn out, wiring apears to be in very good condition.
