I have a Caterpillar Diesel engine serviceman's reference manual, for 5-3/4" bore 6 cyl engines, teh ones used in the D-8 Cat tractors in the early fiftys. On P.180, it discusses the use of "break-in powder" as a third method to hasten seatings of new rings to worn liners. "After assembling & starting the engine, loosen the air cleaner to allow a gap between the flange and the inlet manifold. Run the engine at about 800 rpm and allow the powder to be sucked slowly throught the gap into the engine. Use 1-1/4 teaspoons of powder par cylinder and then tighten the air cleaner, run at idle at 800 rpm for thirty minutes, and it is then ready for service" "this method of break-in has been used successfully when facilities were not available for honing or etching the liners. If first treatment was not effective, a second one may be."
